Despite the escalating efforts by the Turkish lobby, the House Foreign Affairs Committee, with a vote of 27 to 21, paved the way for the Armenian Genocide Resolution, H. Res. 106, to be considered at the House floor. 226 members of the House of Representatives from 39 states have sponsored H. Res. 106. A similar resolution in the Senate, S. Res. 106, has been cosponsored by 31 Senators, so far, including presidential candidate Hillary Clinton (D-NY), Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Sen. John Ensign (D-NV).
According to His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church: “The recognition of the genocide will continue to be a priority issue in the life of the Armenian Community, at large, throughout the world. To fail to recognize the Genocide is truly disrespect toward the memory of the victims of the first genocide of the twentieth century. The affirmation of the Armenian Genocide by the House Foreign Affairs Committee is an important milestone in our efforts to pursue the Armenian question until such time when justice prevails. It is commendable to note the works of Armenian Assembly of America, Armenian National Committee of America, the co-authors of the legislation, as well as the members of House Foreign Affairs Committee, in this regard.â€
