On February 20, 2008, the Primate presided over a commemorative evening on the first anniversary of Khoren Balian’s passing, held at the Western Diocese. Khoren Balian was a renowned intellectual, writer and singer.
Nune Avedisyan delivered the opening remarks and introduced various segments, as well as the speakers during the well-organized program. Professor Gevorg Khrlopian spoke extensively about the late distinguished intellectual. Archpriest Fr. Hovhannes Maroukian beautifully described the spiritual aspects of Khoren Balian.
Khoren Balian graduated from the Seminary of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and was ordained a celibate priest; in the following year he was promoted to the rank of Vartabed by the late Catholicos Vazken I. He was an instrumental figure in the reawakening movement of 1965. “The Legacy of Khoren Balian†was the theme of a speech offered by Mrak Balian. Professor Osheen Keshishian delivered remarks about the late Balian.
His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian in his closing remarks reflected on the intellectual contribution of Khoren Balian to the Armenian Church and its culture. In conclusion, the Primate prayed for the deceased intellectual.
