About St. Mary Armenian Church, Yettem
The village of Yettem (the Armenian word for Eden) received her name as a result of the rapidly growing community of Armenians. Church services in Yettem began in 1903, and in 1909 the cornerstone of a new church was laid. Construction began in 1911 and on July 3, 1911 St. Mary Armenian Church, the fifth Armenian Apostolic Church in America, was consecrated by Bishop Moushegh Seropian of Boston.
Following a tragic fire in 1945, a new edifice was erected and was consecrated on November 16, 1945 presided by Archbishop Mampre Calfayan and Bishop Vartan Kasparian.
On Pentecost Sunday, 2004 the parish observed the 100th anniversary of the first church services held in Yettem. In 2005 the Ladies’ Society of St. Mary celebrated its 90th anniversary.
