The opening ceremony of the "House of Hope-Mer Hooys" Nakashian Children’s Home was held on June 30, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. The Home is located in the Arabkir district of Yerevan, at Aharonian street 2/2. The ceremony commenced with the singing of hyms and a performance by the students of the Arabkir Armenian Church Youth Center.
The Honorable Adrienne Krikorian, Chairman of the "Our Hope" Armenian Charitable Organization in the United States; and Mr. Mihran Mirijanyan, "Mer Hooys" Director, each offered their remarks. They both stated that the focus of the Home will differ from others in Armenia, and that special emphasis will be placed on education. Bishop Mushegh Babayan, Operations Director of the Mother See offered his blessings and remarks.
The Mer Hooys program will be supported by the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of America, the "Our Hope" Armenian charitable organization in the United States and individual benefactors. The Home will offer care for girls aged 10 and up, and will be able to support up to 50 girls. The residents will receive vocational counseling, social support, and educational opportunities. The center will open its doors on September 1, and future plans are being discussed to provide shelter for the homeless, who would also receive psychological support.
