Why Armenians Celebrate Christmas on January 6th

January 6, 2009 — "Armenian Christmas," as it is popularly called, is a culmination of celebrations of events related to Christ's Incarnation. Theophany or Epiphany (or Astvadz-a-haytnootyoon in Armenian) means "revelation of God," which is the central theme of the Christmas Season in the Armenian Church. During the "Armenian Christmas" season, the major events that are celebrated are the Nativity of Christ in Bethlehem and His Baptism in the River Jordan. The day of this major feast in the Armenian Church is January 6th.

Primate to Celebrate the Divine Liturgy on Dec. 28th at St. Peter, Van Nuys

December 17, 2008 — On Sunday, December 28, 2008, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of St. Peter Armenian Church of Van Nuys His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian will celebrate the Divine Liturgy and Deliver the sermon at the church. The heads of committees and subcommittees of St. Peter Armenian Church of Van Nuys will receive Special Recognition Certificates from the Primate during the church service.

Students Will Receive Holy Communion from the Primate

December 17, 2008 — On the joyous occasion of Christmas, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian will make special visitations to several Armenian Schools in the greater Los Angeles area, namely, A.G.B.U. Manoogian-Demirjian (Canoga Park), T.C.A. Arshag Dickranian, A.G.B.U. Manoogian-Demirjian (Pasadena), St. Gregory’s Alfred and Marguerite Hovsepian, and Little Angles Art School. The students will receive Holy Communion from the Primate during these special Christmas visitations, scheduled for December 18-23, 2008.

Primate Presides over St. Peter Armenian Church (Van Nuys) 50th Anniversary Concert

December 17, 2008 — Three Choirs performed during the 50th anniversary concert of St. Peter Armenian Church of Van Nuys. His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, presided over the event. His Eminence Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian also attended this concert.

Handel’s Messiah at St. James, Los Angeles

December 17, 2008 — A Christmas Concert organized by St. James Ladies Society (Los Angeles), was held at the church, on December 14, 2008. The Christmas Concert once again featured the Santa Barbara Choral Society and Orchestra performing Handel’s Messiah, conducted by JoAnne Gondjian Wasserman.

Primate Celebrates the Divine Liturgy at St. James, Los Angeles

December 17, 2008 — After the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, Mrs. Helen Kasparian and Mrs. Victoria Kalajian received “Armenian Spirit” Awards and Commendation Certificates from the Primate for years of dedicated service to the Church. At the request of several Tarkmanchats School (Jerusalem) Alumni who were present during the church service, a prayer service for the repose of the soul of His Beatitude Archbishop Yeghishe Doorian, late Patriarch of Jerusalem. A reception was held following the church service.

St. John Armenian Church of San Diego Acquires 17 Acres of Land

December 17, 2008 — Under the spiritual leadership of Rev. Archpriest Fr. Datev Totoulian and devoted efforts of the members of the Parish Council, St. John Armenian Church of San Diego has acquired a 17-acre parcel. The new church building in San Diego is expected to rise on this new acquired piece of land.

Executive Clergy Council Meeting

December 17, 2008 — The expansion of the Western Diocese has posed a significant challenge to the Diocese in terms of adequately serving our faithful with the available resources, demanding new approaches and new programs to effectively address the problems, whether spiritual-religious needs or personal/family issues faced by our faithful.

Primate’s 5th Annual Children’s Christmas Pageant

December 12, 2008 — On the morning of Friday, December 12, more then 550 students from Armenian Schools throughout Los Angeles arrived at the Diocesan Headquarters’ Kalaydjian Hall, accompanied by nearly 30 teachers, and parents. Several Clergymen were also in attendance. The assembly was organized on the occasion of the blessed Christmas season under the leadership of His Eminence Abp. Hovnan Derderian. This event has become a revered tradition in the Western Diocese, as this is the fifth time it has been held.

Good Deed Service Awards Presented by the Western Diocese and APN

December 12, 2008 — “Footprints on the sands of time are not made by sitting down.” On the magical night of December 8, 2008, a wonderful event took place, one that celebrated youth and their accomplishments. Under the auspices of His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian and hosted by the Armenian Professionals Network (APN), Good Deed Service Awards were given to six noteworthy high school students. Rozi Janezian, Ferrahian High School, Natalie Majaryan, Alfred and Marguerite Hovsepian Armenian School, Serli Polatoglu, AGBU Manoogian-Demirjian School, Natalie Posdaljian, Granada Hills Charter High School, Tanya Moukhtarian, AGBU High School, and Ani Shirvanian, AGBU Manoogian-Demirjian School were all recipients of the esteemed and cherished Good Deed Service Award.

December 12, 2008 — His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, attended the annual Christmas gathering of the Armenian Assembly at Stella Derrostomian’s residence, on December 7, 2008. The newly appointed director of the Western Region Office of the Armenian Assembly, Mr. Yeghig Keshishian spoke to the guests after the invocation offered by Dn. Matthew Ash.

“Parev” Commemorates 20th Anniversary of the Earthquake in Armenia

December 12, 2008 — On December 7, 2008, the Glendale Presbyterian Church hosted a commemorative event for the victims of the Earthquake in Armenia, organized by the “Parev” TV program. Rev. Fr. Mampre Kesabyan, representing the Primate, attended this event.

Primate Meets with Arizona Parish Priest and P.C. Chairman

December 11, 2008 — They briefed His Eminence about the successful progression of the construction of St. Apkar Armenian Church of Arizona. A survey of the construction site was conducted by His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, on November 21, 2008, during his pastoral visit to Arizona. His Eminence was also informed about the preparations underway for the next pastoral visit of the Primate to the Armenian Church of Arizona on February 22-23, 2008.

"In Remembrance of the Earthquake Victims": A Special Commemorative Event Organized by the Western Diocese

December 11, 2008 — Beginning at 7:00 PM, on December 7, 2008, an ‘Evening of Prayer and Reflection,’ on the 20th anniversary of Earthquake in Armenia in ‘Remembrance of the 1988 Earthquake Victims’ organized by "Good Samaritan" Organization of the Western Diocese was held at the Diocesan Headquarters. The Program consisted of two main segments.

20th Anniversary of the Earthquake in Armenia Special Requiem Services throughout the Western Diocese

December 11, 2008 — Upon the encouragement of His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, special requiem services for the souls of the victims of the earthquake in Armenia were held in all churches throughout the Diocese on Sunday, December 7, 2008, after the Liturgy. At the same time, a special message issued by the Primate was also read by the celebrant-priests in all churches throughout the Diocese.

WD Vicar General Attends Episcopalian Mass at St. John’s Cathedral

December 11, 2008 — On Sunday, December 7, 2008, Very Rev. Fr. Dajad Dz. V. Yardemian, Vicar General, representing His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, attended the Mass for the Second Sunday of Advent at St. John’s Cathedral in Los Angeles. In the spirit of unity and Christian fellowship, a warm and close relationship has been developed between the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church and the Episcopal Church.

Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian Presides over Commemoration event at St. Peter, Van Nuys

December 11, 2008 — On Sunday, December 7, 2008, Rev. Archpriest Fr. Shnork Demirjian, after the celebration of the Holy Liturgy, read the Primate’s message on the 20th anniversary of the earthquake in Armenia wherein His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian lauded the resilience of the Armenian people who had overcome the destruction and losses of more than 30,000 lives, caused by the earthquake on December 7, 1998. Despite the enormous difficulties and pains inflected by the earthquake, Armenia gained her independence in 1991 and the country has made an impressive progress towards becoming a free and advanced country.

FIFTH DIOCESAN CHRISTMAS BALL: SUCCESSFUL AND ENTHUSIASTIC

December 9, 2008 — Close to 400 people, including local and state dignitaries, Republic of Armenia Consul General in Los Angeles, and His Eminence Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian, had gathered in the Nazareth and Sima Kalaydjian Banquet Hall of the Arshag and Eleanor Dickranian Diocesan Complex, on Saturday evening, December 6, 2008, to take part in honoring successful Armenian-Americans during the Annual Christmas Ball. This annual event is a well established Diocesan tradition presided over by His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate.

St. Vartan Oakland Hosts 60th Annual ACYO General Assembly

December 5, 2008 — On Thanksgiving weekend youth from throughout the Western Diocese traveled to the City of Oakland to be part of the 60th Annual General Assembly and Convention of the ACYO-WD. With nearly 200 youth in attendance, the event was truly a special occasion. The events took place under the leadership of His Eminence Abp. Hovnan Derderian who participated throughout the weekend, the Diocesan Youth Director Fr. Avedis Abovian, as we well as several clergyman and parents from parishes throughout the Western Diocese.

ABC To Broadcast Documentary About Armenian Church This Month

December 4, 2008 — An hour-long documentary titled “Everyone Prays at Holy Etchmiadzin” is slated to air on the national ABC television network in the month of December. The Eastern Diocese co-produced this beautiful film which conveys the inspiring majesty of our Mother See. We are urging our parishioners to contact your local ABC affiliate to ensure that the program is broadcast in your area.

December 4, 2008 — On November 30, 2008, starting at 5:00 PM, the AGBU Yervant Babayan Educational Foundation held its 2009-recongnition event at the Nazareth and Sima Kalaydjian Banquet Hall of the Arshag and Eleanor Dickranian Diocesan Complex in Burbank, California. Buenos Aires Senator Sergio Nahabedian at the Western Diocese

December 4, 2008 — On November 26, 2008, at 2:00 PM, Argentine Senator Sergio Nahabedian (Buenos Aires) accompanied by Mr. Ara Aharonian paid an official visit to the Diocesan Headquarters and were received by His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, in the Armen and Gloria Hampar Room of the Western Diocese. A group of Diocesan clergy, including His Eminence Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian, and several prominent and active members of the community were also present during the meeting.

Lebanon Celebrated the 64th Anniversary of Her Independence

December 4, 2008 — On November 23, 2008, Mr. Raffi Kinderjian, representing His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, attended a reception on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Lebanon at Riviera Country Club, organized by the Consulate General of the Republic of Lebanon in Los Angeles.

Newly Ordained Priests to Celebrate the Divine Liturgy on Dec. 7, 2008

December 2, 2008 — Less than two months ago, Fr. Nerses Hayrapetyan and Fr. Diran Avagyan were ordained and consecrated to the Priesthood by His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, in St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church of Pasadena, bringing the total number of the priests ordained in 2008 to four – an unprecedented accomplishment in the History of the Western Diocese, after more than 10 years of no priesthood-ordinations in the Diocese.

November 25, 2008 — The Honorable Dennis P. Zine, Los Angeles City Councilman, representing the Third District, was the Guest Speaker at a Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, November 22, 2008, beginning at 9:30 AM. His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate presided over the Prayer Breakfast which was held at the Diocesan Complex in the Armen and Gloria Hampar Reception Room. His Eminence Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian, Joseph Kanimian, Esq., Chair of the Diocesan Council, and several other clergy and other Diocesan affiliates were among the attendees at the Prayer Breakfast.

November 25, 2008 — On Sunday, November 23, 2008, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, assisted by Fr. November 25, 2008 — On Saturday November 22, 2008, the Hunchakian Social Democratic Party marked its 121st anniversary at United Community Church in Glendale, California. His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, accompanied by several Diocesan clergy attended this event.

Commemorative Event at Montebello

November 25, 2008 — On Saturday, November 22, 2008, members of the Armenian community congregated around the Armenian Genocide Monument in Montebello, California, to join Senator Serjio Nahabedian of Buenos Ayres of Argentina and pay their respect to the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide.

RA Minister of Diaspora at Western Diocese

November 25, 2008 — In her presentation, Her Excellency Hranoush Hakobyan noted that the ministry was primarily created in response to the numerous requests by the Diaspora Armenians. She specially stressed the importance of the Armenian Church as the epicenter of the Armenian identity revitalization efforts, pursued by the Ministry of Diaspora.

November 25, 2008 — On November 18, 2008, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, accompanied by Fr. Avedis Abovian, Youth Director, visited the Davidian-Mariamian Educational Foundation participating-school Miller E.S. in Burbank, California. The Primate spent a considerable amount of time to talk to a gathering of more than sixty students about various religious topics, in a plain and understandable language for the children.

OOC Youth Gathering

November 24, 2008 — On Saturday November 22, 2008, Reverend Father Avedis Abovian, Reverend Father Muron Aznikian, Reverend Father John Saif, Father John Mikhail and approximately 80 youth members from the Oriental Orthodox Churches of Southern California joined together at the Angeles National Forest campsite in Mt. Baldy, CA for the OOC Youth Gathering.

Farewell Reception in Honor of Fr. Mikael Kyureghyan

November 24, 2008 — For more than 15 years Fr. Mikael Kyureghyan has dedicatedly served as the Pastor of the Armenian Church of La Verne during which he was able to effectively organize the Parish with the help of the Parish Council and the Ladies’ Society. Archpriest Fr. Sipan Mekhsian, Chancellor of the Western Diocese, representing the Primate, read the message of His Eminence wherein the distinguished service of the retiring Parish Priest was highly praised and acknowledged by the Primate of the Western Diocese.

Guest Clergy from Eastern Diocese Celebrates Divine Liturgy at St. Gregory, Pasadena

November 24, 2008 — A special message from the Primate was read by Parish Priest Very Rev. Fr. Baret Dz. V. Yeretsian. In His message the Primate highly praises Archpriest Fr. Mampre Kouzouian by refereeing to his reputation as ‘brave clergy’ who cares deeply, and is loved and respected by clergy and laity alike. November 24, 2008 — On the 31st anniversary of the establishment of the St. John Armenian Church in San Diego, His Eminence Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian accompanied by guest-clergy from the Eastern Diocese, Archpriest Fr. Garnig Hallajian, visited St. John Armenian Church – San Diego, and celebrated the Divine Liturgy and delivered the sermon, assisted by Parish Priest Archpriest Fr. Datev Tatoulian and deacons. Primate’s Pastoral Visit to the Armenian Church of Desert

November 24, 2008 — On November 16, 2008, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, accompanied by Dn. Razmik Sargissian, paid a pastoral visit to the Armenian Church of Desert in Rancho Mirage (near Palm Spring). During his pastoral visit, the Primate celebrated the Divine Liturgy and delivered the sermon. A reception was held following the church service. Afterwards, the Primate met with the Parish Council and was briefed by the members about the state of the Parish in the area.

November 24, 2008 — On Sunday, November 16, 2008, the Debut Concert of Gomidas Choir, organized by the Armenian Youth Association of California, was held at the Glendale Presbyterian Church. Fr. Tavit Zelveyan represented the Diocese at this event.

November 24, 2008 — On Sunday, November 16, 2008, under the auspices of His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, and His Excellency Mr. Armen Liloyan, Consul General of the Republic of Armenia in Los Angeles, the Anoushavan Abrahamian Educational Fund Fourth Annual Gala Banquet was held in Plladio Restaurant Club in Glendale, CA. Getting Rid of Landmines and Cluster Bombs in Nagorno Karabakh

November 18, 2008 — Nagorno Karabakh, which over the last decade has had some of the world's most dangerous ground to walk on, is turning a corner. After working steadily in the region since 2000, The HALO Trust, an international charity, has cleared more than 26 square kilometres of minefields and 125 square kilometers of battlefields, and destroyed 51,600 landmines, cluster bombs and other unexploded ordnance (UXO). Statistics show just 5 casualties in 2007 and 10 in the first ten months of 2008, markedly down from the 2004 peak of 43.

Western Diocese Supports Armenia Fund Bike Ride

November 7, 2008 — On October 28, 2008, Armenian-Canadian bikers, Mrs. Calabrina Boyajian and her husband Ara Boyajian arrived in San Francisco and were received by the enthusiastic members of the local Armenian-American community, including Fr. Datev Harutyunian, Pastor of St. Andrew Armenian Church of Santa Clara Vally, before starting their 350 mile bike-ride from Monterey to Los Angeles. Proceeds from the ride will benefit the construction of a new school in Spitakashen, a remote village in the Martuni region of Armenia.

October 30, 2008 — Documentarian J. Michael Hagopian has recently completed the final film in his "The Witnesses" trilogy, The River Ran Red. The 60-minute documentary premiered at the Arpa International Film Festival on October 24, 2008, at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.

Primate's Pastoral Visit to Seattle, Washington

October 30, 2008 — On October 23-24, 2008, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, paid a pastoral visit to the Armenian Church of Seattle, Washington, and met with Fr. October 30, 2008 — On October 23, 2008, Archpriest Fr. October 24, 2008 — On October 19, 2008, Very Rev. Fr. Dajad Dz. V. Yardemian, Vicar General, accompanied by the newly ordained Parish Priest Fr. Nerses Hayrapetyan visited the Sunday School program and met with teachers and students.

Primate’s Pastoral Visit to St. Andrew, Santa Clara

October 24, 2008 — On Sunday, October 19, 2008, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, paid a pastoral visit to the St. Andrew Armenian Church of Santa Clara. After the celebration of the Divine Liturgy and deliverance of the sermon, the Primate performed the blessing rite of the Sunday School students and the scouts. The Children received small crosses from the Primate on the occasion. A significant number of faithful received Holy Communion from His Eminence after the ceremonies.

Oriental Orthodox Sunday School Students’ Contest

October 24, 2008 — Celebration of the Divine Liturgy in Armenian will mark the beginning of this year’s contest. It is important to note that this joint effort of the sister churches is not a mere fun activity for the youth, but an attempt to effectively address the issues of Christian education in our Sunday School programs.

Meeting with Former Artsakh President

October 24, 2008 — On October 18, 2008, during a special meeting with the former president of Artsakh, Mr. Arkadi Ghokasyan, organized by Armenia Fund, in preparation for the upcoming 2008 telethon, the Vicar General of the Western Diocese, Very Rev. Fr. Dajad Dz. V. Yardemian, representing the Primate, met with the former president and other participants.

Diocesan Council Meeting

October 24, 2008 — The discussions at the meeting revolved around the construction of the Mother Cathedral and other agenda items, namely, the recent Blessing of Holy Muron in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and the ensuing blessing of water ceremonies throughout the Diocese, and the successful Priesthood ordination ceremonies on October 15th and 16th, at the St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church of Pasadena.

ACYO Senior Retreat Explores Nature of God

October 24, 2008 — In exploring the weekend's deeply spiritual theme, instructors Fr. Avedis, and Dn. Matthew used sources ranging for the Psalms and the Gospels to Opera, and Internet video. During classes participants were challenged to expand their notions of the Lord, and comprehend the awesomeness of his love and patience. Much credit goes to the youth for actively engaging in this difficult topic.

William Saroyan Centennial Event

October 24, 2008 — A gala reception and photo exhibition celebrating the William Saroyan Centennial, organized by the Dickran Tevrizian Fellowship Program and the USC Institute of Armenian Studies, and hosted by Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County was held on October 19, 2008. Archpriest Fr. Dr. Zaven Arzoumanian represented the Primate at this event.

California Ecumenical Council of Churches Event

October 24, 2008 — On Friday, October 16, 2008, the Western Diocese, represented by Archpreist Fr. Arshag Khatchadourian and Dn. Matthew Ash, participated in a luncheon event where Dr. Michael Kinnamon, president of the National Council of Churches, spoke on the state of ecumenism in the 21st Century. The event was hosted by the Southern California Ecumenical Council, an organization with which the Diocese is an active member. The event was well attended with many representatives from the Southern California's largest Christian communities.

Armenia Fund – Western Region Chairperson Visits Western Diocese

October 24, 2008 — On October 16, 2008, the Chairperson of USA Armenia Fund Western Region, Mrs. Maria Mehranian, visited His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, at the Diocesan Headquarters and briefed the Primate on the upcoming Armenia Fund telethon.

Western Diocese to Cooperate with Glendale Fire Department

October 24, 2008 — Mr. Alexandri, a former civilian employee of the Glendale Fire Department, reached an agreement with Captain Tom Propst to arrange a recruitment program for volunteer English-Armenian translators from Glendale Parishes to assist the fire department in cases of community emergencies, such as earthquakes and wildfires in the city.

Ordination of Two Young Priests

October 17, 2008 — On October 15th and 16th, St. Gregory the Illuminator Church of Pasadena hosted the calling rite, the ordination and the consecration to the Priesthood of Fr. Diran and Fr. Nerses by His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate. Diocesan clergy joined by guest clergy from the Eastern Diocese and Australia accompanied and assisted the Primate during the Priesthood calling, ordination and consecration rites. Faithful members gathered on both days under the high dome of St. Gregory the Illuminator Church of Pasadena to observe the ceremonies.

Primate Consecrates Holy Images and Stain Glasses at St. Peter Armenian Church of Van Nuys

October 17, 2008 — Celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the establishment of St. Peter Armenian Church of Van Nuys are underway this year. In the evening of October 8, 2008, during a special ceremony on the joyous occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the church, in the sanctuary of St. Peter Armenian Church – Van Nuys, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, assisted by Archpriest Fr. Primate Fondly Remembered Varnum Paul at Funeral

October 15, 2008 — The founding-father of the Western Diocese Endowment Fund Varnum Paul, Esq., passed away at age 100, after a short illness. The repose of the soul service of Varnum Paul, Esq., was held in the evening of October 5, 2008, at the St. John Armenian Church of San Francisco, presided over by the Parish Priest, Archpriest Fr. Sarkis Petoyan.

ARMENIAN FESTIVAL, PRPOOR, TAKES PLACE IN FRESNO

October 15, 2008 — A unique three day festival of Armenian culture took place on the lovely grounds of the Armenian Home in Fresno, This event commenced on Friday, September 26 thru Sunday, the 28th. Prpoor refers to the extract of grape juice which is boiled in order to produce molasses. Traditionally, this is made by Armenian farmers who have vineyards.

St. Apkar Armenian Church of Arizona Construction Progresses as Planned

October 15, 2008 — The construction of the church is expected to be completed by early 2009. The church will be consecrated by His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, upon the completion of the construction.

Primate Distributed Holy Muron among Diocesan Clergy

October 15, 2008 — On October 7, 2008, Parish Priests from the greater Los Angeles area gathered in the Diocesan Headquarters for the distribution of Holy Muron by His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, following his return from the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. His Eminence is the Chair of the Muron Committee and by the invitation of His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Chatholicos of All Armenians, had traveled to Armenia earlier in September to participate in the September 28th ‘Blessing of Muron’ at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin.

Iraqi Armenian Association of LA Donates $5000 to WD Mother Cathedral

October 15, 2008 — On September 14, 2008, during ‘the Rise of the Mother Cathedral’ banquet, the president of the Iraqi Armenian Association of Los Angeles, Mr. Khatchig Janoyan, pledged $5000 on behalf of the organization towards the construction of the Mother Cathedral of the Western Diocese.

Faithful Received Blessed Water on Sunday, October 12, 2008

October 13, 2008 — The newly blessed Muron brought back home by His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, was used in all churches of the Western Diocese, on Sunday, October 12, 2008, during the special blessing of water ceremonies. The blessed water was then distributed among the faithful upon the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy in all churches of the Western Diocese. The Holy Muron serves as a bridge between the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and Armenian churches spread all over the world.

50 Years of Success for St. Peter Armenian Church – Van Nuys

October 13, 2008 — On the occasion of St. Peter Armenian Church’s 50th Anniversary, Mrs. Rose Ketchoyan has generously donated $25,000 to the church. Mr. and Mrs. John and Rose Ketchoyan became involved with St. Peter Church in 1957 and were very active not only with St. Peter Church, but also with the Western Diocese and the church camp in specific. After Mr. Ketchoyan’s passing in 2005, Mrs. Ketchoyan still remains involved with many church functions and is currently the St. Peter Ladies’ Society Treasurer. St. Peter Church is blessed to have parishioners like Mrs. Ketchoyan to help keep the church thriving.

October 10, 2008 — Dn. Arsen Hayrapetyan was born on July 7, 1981, in Ararat, Armenia. From 1988 to 1998, he attended the local elementary and secondary schools. In 1998, he was admitted to the Vazkenian Theological Seminary in the province of Sevan, Armenia. After graduation, he pursued his advanced theological studies at the Kevorkian Theological Seminary in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. In September 2008, under the instruction of His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of North America, Dn. Arsen Hayrapetyan was enrolled in a Master of Arts program for religious studies at the Claremont School of Theology and is expected to graduate in three years. After ordination and consecration to the Priesthood, he will resume his service in a pastoral capacity for the Armenian churches of Santa Clarita and Antelope Valley.

DN. GRIGOR AVAGYAN TO SERVE AS LA VERNE PARISH PRIEST AFTER ORDINATION AND CONSECRATION TO THE PRIESTHOOD

October 10, 2008 — Grigor Avagyan was born on March 8, 1983, in Yerevan, Armenia. In his teen years, he served as the Chairman of the ACYO – Nork Branch, from 1998 to 1999, organizing various activities and programs. In 1999, He was admitted to the Armenian Seminary of Jerusalem. In September 2008, under the directive of His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, Dn. Grigor Avagyan was enrolled in a Master of Arts program for religious studies at the Claremont School of Theology and is expected to graduate in three years. After ordination and consecration to the Priesthood, he will resume his service in a pastoral capacity for the Armenian Church of La Verne.

Two New Priesthood-Candidates Join the Diocese

October 10, 2008 — We are pleased to announce that upon the decision of His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, Dn. Razmik Sargissian and Dn. Samuel Safaryan have been recently recruited as priesthood-candidates and will join the Diocese in the near future. In the recent years, under the leadership of His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, several new parishes have been established and a number of the existing parishes have been reorganized or expanded. Meanwhile, several clergy and priesthood-candidates have been recruited by the Western Diocese to meet the spiritual needs of the large number of our faithful throughout the Diocese. There is an increase in the number of deacons and acolytes ordained throughout the Diocese, and after many years new priests are being ordained and consecrated in the Western Diocese.

Ecumenical Prayer Service at St. Gregory the Illuminator Mother Cathedral in Yerevan

October 10, 2008 — On 27 September His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians and His All Holiness Bartholomew I, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople presided over the Ecumenical Prayer service in the St. Gregory the Illuminator Mother Cathedral in Yerevan. During the Ecumenical ceremony the Catholicos of All Armenians addressed his message of blessing to the faithful, expressing His joy that representatives of Sister-Churches and international ecumenical organizations had come to the Mother See for a joint prayer and in support of the Armenian Church and nation.

Ecumenical Patriarch visits the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin

October 10, 2008 — On 27 September His All Holiness Bartholomew I, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, arrived in Armenia to take part in the celebration of the Blessing of the Holy Muron. His Holiness Bartholomew had been invited to come to Armenia by His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians. His Holiness Bartholomew I led a delegation of representatives from the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople. The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople is the Archbishop of Constantinople, ranking as "first among equals" in the Eastern Orthodox Churches.

Opening of New Studio and Future Satellite Broadcasts Announced for “Shoghakat” Television

October 10, 2008 — On 26 September, His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, presided over the opening ceremony of the new "Shoghakat" TV Studios. The new building was renovated through the generosity of the national benefactors Mr. and Mrs. Vatche and Tamar Manoukian.

October 10, 2008 — The baptismal-font was constructed through generosity of Mr. Armen Sargisian. The Pontiff awarded Mr. Sargisian with the medal of Gregory the Illuminator afterwards.

Blessed Water to Be Offered to Faithful on Sunday, October 12, 2008

October 9, 2008 — In continuation of the apostolic chain, intertwined with the foundation of our church, and as a symbol of unity for our people, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, upon his return from his trip to the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin for the Blessing of the Holy Muron, which takes place once every seven years, has brought a portion of the newly blessed Muron back to the Western Diocese, which will be used during the special blessing of water ceremonies throughout the Diocese on Sunday, October 12, 2008. The blessed water then will be offered to the faithful during the celebration of the Divine Liturgy in all churches of the Western Diocese. The Holy Muron serves as a bridge between the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and Armenian churches spread all over the world.

October 9, 2008 — The Spiritual Retreat of St. John Armenian Church of San Diego, sponsored by the Ladies’ Central Council of the Western Diocese, and hosted by the St. John Ladies’ Society of San Diego, was held following a similar retreat held a few days earlier in St. Paul Armenian Church of Fresno. The Very Rev. Fr. Dajad Dz. V. Yardemian, Vicar General, represented the Primate at the retreat. “The Role of the Holy Spirit in our Daily Lives” was the theme of the retreat lectures and dialogue.

Ladies Society Hosts Spiritual Retreat in Central Region

October 9, 2008 — Opening remarks were offered by Mrs. Araxie Boyamian, Chair of the Ladies Society Central Council, and the opening prayer was offered by the pastor of the hosting parish, Archpriest Fr. Arshen Aivazian, who spoke briefly on the retreat’s theme. The workshop was conducted by Dn. Ash, who spoke in depth about the importance of allowing the Holy Spirit to enter our lives, and about the Fruits of the Spirit. Following lunch, and a Q&A session, a closing prayer was offered by the Very Rev. Fr. Dajad Yademian.

Celebrating the Installation of the Rev. Kurt Robert Christenson

October 3, 2008 — In the afternoon of Sunday September 28, 2008, Archpriest Fr. Dr. Zaven Arzoumanian and Yertsgin Joyce, representing His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, attended the joyous celebration of the installation of the Rev. Kurt Robert Christenson as the Senior Pastor of the Salem Lutheran Church in Glendale.

WD Youth Participate in 4th Annual Pan North American ACYO Retreat

October 3, 2008 — Chicago, Il – On Friday, September 26 members of the ACYO Central Council arrived at Chicago’s Midway Airport, excited to be participating in the 4th Annual ACYO Pan North American Retreat (PNAR). The retreat’s theme was “8 Days a Week,” a reference not only to the famous Beetles song, but to living Christ’s message throughout our lives, and looking forward to God’s kingdom. The retreat was run by the Rev. Fr. Stepanos Doudoukjian, with workshops and sessions offered by himself, seminarian sDn. Ben Rith-Najarian, Julie Hoplamazian, Dn. Matthew Ash, and Dn. Levon Karamian

Diocese Mourns the Passing of Varnum Paul, Esq.

October 3, 2008 — With great sadness, we report the passing of Varnum Paul, Esq., at age 100, after a short illness. The repose of the soul service of Varnum Paul, Esq., will be held in the evening of October 5, 2008, at St. John Armenian Church of San Francisco, by Parish Priest Archpriest Fr. Sarkis Petoyan. His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, will preside over the funeral service of Varnum Paul, Esq., on October 6, 2008.
