On January 31, 2008, the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church hosted a special event honoring the memory of St. Vartan and his companions who took arm for the first time in the history to defend the Christian Faith and the integrity of Armenia as an independent country.
The 1036 martyrs of the first holy war in the history, are the most significant and revered saints of the Armenian Church. Thus the commemoration of their holy memory is of great significance among the faithful of the Armenian Church.
The evening began with a solemn celebration of the Divine Liturgy. The temporary sanctuary of the Western Diocese was filled with the faithful, who had come to pay homage to the memory of the great Christian warriors and remember their crucial role in the survival of the Armenian Church and nation.
His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, accompanied by several clergymen from the Western Diocese, participated in the event. Archpriest Fr. Arshag Khatchadourian celebrated the Divine Liturgy. The magnificent celebration of the Divine Liturgy was followed by a special program that was held in the Kalaydjian Hall of the Western Diocesan Arshag and Eleanor Dickranian Complex. Several distinguished speakers expanded on various aspects of the St. Vartan Day and its significance in the Armenian history.
The Second part of the program was carried on a more religious/educational theme. Dr. Sarkis Mesrobian explained in detail the Lord’s Prayer, expanding on the meaning of this most universal and magnificent Christian prayer and how it could be understood in the context of St. Vartan Day.
In conclusion, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, before offering the closing prayer, thanked the organizing committee, and acknowledged the presence of His Eminence Archbishop Bagrat Galstanian, Primate of the Diocese of Canada, during this moving and educational event.
