News regarding the activities of the Youth Department of the Western Diocese.
On December 4, 2013, ACYO members of the Armenian Church of Ventura County led by Deacon-in-Charge Sarkis Alanjian paid a visit to the homeless at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Westlake Village and distributed food to the less fortunate people of God. The Primate commended the leadership of Dn. Alanjian for instilling in the hearts of the youth the essence of the Christian spirit.
The 65th annual ACYO Convention, presided by Diocesan Primate Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, was held at the Armenian Church of Crescenta Valley over Thanksgiving Weekend 2013. The Assembly convened on November 29 with nearly 70 delegates in attendance.
On November 23, parishioners from St. John Armenian Apostolic Church, in San Francisco, ACYO members, the Diocesan Youth Director, Deacon Mkrtich Ksachikyan and Parish Priest, Fr. Mesrop Ash met at St. Martin de Porres house of hospitality to prepare lunch for the needy and the homeless. ACYO members from St. Vartan Armenian Apostolic Church of Oakland also joined the group and everyone together served with gladness the hundreds that walked in to St. Martin de Porres.
Since its inception earlier this year by Diocesan Primate Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, the Armenian Church Campus Ministry has been actively engaged in the college and university life. The program’s coordinator has been holding weekly meetings with Armenian Students Associations (ASA)s of various universities in the Southern California Region.
On September 20, 2013 at Back to School Night or St. Gregory Hovsepian School in Pasadena, a newly renovated Science Lab donated by Dr. ad Mrs. Stephan and Maro Yacoubian was presented in a grand ribbon cutting ceremony.
This year’s Armenian Identity Enhancement courses drew the participation of more than 20 Armenian youth from Arizona, Seattle and the Greater Los Angeles area. The program, specifically designed for youth members between the ages 15-30, was designed to equip the youth with a sound knowledge of the history of the Armenian Church and the Armenian people as well as to introduce them to the Armenian vibrant culture.
More than 40 Junior Godfathers and their friends attended the social gathering at the Primate’s residence on Sunday, October 6, 2013. Organized by the Junior Godfathers Committee of the Western Diocese, the venue allowed for the youth to enjoy the camaraderie and delicious barbecue prepared by Michael Chakerian and former Youth Director Rev. Fr. Avedis Abovian.
On September 29, on the Feast of the Holy Cross of Varag, the Youth Director paid a visit to St. John Garabed Armenian Apostolic Church in San Diego. He was welcomed by Archpriest Fr. Datev Tatoulian, Pastor of the host parish, the members of the Parish Council and the parishioners. The day also marked the 42nd Anniversary of the establishment of the ACYO of the San Diego Parish.
On September 21, 2013, ACYO representatives along with ACYO Central Council members convened at St. Vartan, Armenian Apostolic Church, in Oakland to discuss matters pertaining to ACYO chapters in Northern California. Led by Fr. Hovel Ohanyan, pastor of St. Vartan Armenian Church, Fr. Mesrop Ash, pastor of St. John Armenian Apostolic Church, San Francisco and the Diocesan Youth Director, Deacon Mkrtich Ksachikyan, ACYO Central Council Representatives Nora Barin, Deacon Daniel Hairabedian, Natalie Kazarian, and Michelle Yahnian presented details about the upcoming events that will be hosted by the Central Council and welcomed comments and concerns from the attendees about former events hosted by the Central Council and also matters relating to the respective ACYO chapters.
With the blessing of the Primate, clergy, representatives of the ACYO Central Council and ACYO members from the Southern Region of the Western Diocese convened for a meeting at the Diocesan Headquarters on Saturday, September 14, 2013. Collectively, they discussed the upcoming events organized by the ACYO Central Council and heard reports presented by the respective ACYO chapter.
On Sunday, September 8, the Youth Director Dn. Mkrtich Ksachikyan visited St. James Armenian Apostolic Church in Los Angeles and served at the holy altar. Following the Divine Liturgy, Deacon Mkrtich met with the ACYO of the Parish.
On September 1, 2013, Diocesan Youth Director Deacon Mkrtich Ksachikyan paid a visit to Seattle, WA where he met ACYO members of Holy Resurrection Armenian Apostolic Church. Led by Rev. Fr. Yeghia Isayan, elections of ACYO board members were held after which more than fifty youth members gathered for a camp fire.
We are happy to announce that the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of North America, under the auspices of H.E. Abp. Hovnan Derderian, Primate, has launched an exciting mission on the collegiate level.
On Saturday, August 17, the Youth Director attended the ACYO Beach Party in Huntington Beach, hosted by the ACYO of St. Mary Armenian Church in Costa Mesa. The event brought ACYO members from different chapters together, where the youth enjoyed swimming, playing football, and in the evening gathered at the beach bonfire for smores.
The Christian Youth Mission to Armenia (CYMA) and Fuller Center for Housing Armenia (FCHA) joined forces in late July to build hope for a low-income family in the village of Kakavadzor in the Aragatsotn region of Armenia. During the two-day collaboration, the groups mixed heavy cement, passed buckets, poured a concrete porch and the interior flooring, and plastered the interior walls of three rooms.
