The air was filled with excitement and spirits ran high for the Third Annual Junior Godfathers Day on Sunday, February 24, 2013. Last year, hundreds of faithful witnessed the grandiose ceremony of the unveiling of the Junior Godfathers Pomegranate Tree. Because of the dedicated efforts of the Junior Godfathers’ Committee under the steadfast leadership of Chair Alice Chakrian, the number of Junior Godfathers of St. Leon Armenian Cathedral continues to grow.
On the Third Sunday of the Great Lent (Sunday of the Prodigal Son), festivities commenced with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy by Rev. Fr. Khajag Shahbazyan, Pastor of St. Leon Armenian Cathedral. Diocesan Primate Archbishop Hovnan Derderian presided over the service.
His Eminence blessed the newest Junior Godfathers of the Cathedral and encouraged them to preserve their Christian Faith and the sacred traditions of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The Primate also expressed his sincere gratitude to the members of the Junior Godfathers Committee for their firm belief in the mission of bringing the children to closer to Christ, our Savior and their keen initiative in involving the youth in the life of the Church.
Following the church service, the Primate led a procession of clergy and faithful to the Southern (Oruncakciel) Entrance of the Cathedral a huge crowd had gathered for the unveiling of the new Junior Godfathers’ names on the ever-growing Pomegranate Tree. The Primate asked the jubilant children to recite the Lord’s Prayer (Derunagan Aghotk) in unison. Parents and children proceeded for the unveiling ceremony of the names of new Junior Godfathers.
