Western Diocese

On Wednesday, November 18, a reception was held at the Diocesan Complex honoring John Chiang, State Controller.  Under the auspices of His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate, the Government Relations and Protocol Committee of the Western Diocese sponsored  the reception to afford leading  members of the community the opportunity to hear first hand a report of the state's financial condition.   This event is one of a series of receptions organized by the Primate to improve communication, share dialogue, and develop an ongoing relationship with government officials.

Lily Balian, Chair of the Committee, welcomed the guests and introduced Marty Dakessian, Esq., noted Tax Attorney and member of the committee, who introduced the honored guest. Dakessian recounted the Controller's vast experience and distinguished career, beginning with his service as a tax law specialist with the Internal Revenue Service¸ and his first election to the Board of Equalization in 1996 where he served two terms, including three years as Chair. This was followed by his election win in November 2006 where he served as California's Chief Fiscal Officer.

In his remarks, Chiang delivered a clear and concise report on the present financial condition of the State of California; stating that we are presently operating with a deficit and facing difficult challenges to improve the state's economy.   He candidly answered questions, graciously posed for pictures and visited informally with the guests.

His Eminence Archbishop Derderian thanked the Controller John Chiang for his commitment and dedicated service to the citizens of our state and commended him for his fiscal leadership.  The Primate offered his blessings and hope for a renewed financial stability for our state under his direction and guidance.

Guests enjoyed a beautifully decorated Christmas table, featuring Armenian delicacies and pastries, prepared by the members of the committee, Marty Dakessian generously hosted the reception and thanked the committee members for their help and assistance, with special thanks to Maral Sarafian, Nancy Arabian, Suzy  Hovanesyan and Lena Kaimian.
